Keyno†es, musical life in the Netherlands
Liggen in een gras/Topos
Thus in Part One we experience a strange, incomprehensible world which composes itself as a fait accompli upon the still untrammeled child. In the music we hear open octaves which are slowly filled in with fifths and fourths. In the beginning the performers sing only vowel sounds (rich in harmonics) and only gradually shift to text. From pure being to the shaping of being... The drawings in this part mostly recall Tonke Dragt's illustrations for her book De brief voor de koning. In Part Two the adolescent becomes aware of sexual urges, to which he/she can give free rein, frightening as this might be. Our balancing between adult and childish behaviour is beautifully conveyed. The drawings show little turbulent, spermatozoic figures, with occasionally a head bowed in shame. Liggen in een gras/Topos is a successful integration of different art forms. Poems, drawings and music complement each other in such a way that space is left for the listener/reader/looker to make his or her own interpretation.
